Individual counseling allows us to work through personal issues in a one-on-one setting. We can safely process challenging beliefs and difficult emotions, as well as identify goals and areas needing attention. Looking at thoughts, behaviors and feelings can create a new sense of self-awareness and a better understanding of others around us. I provide a safe, confidential and empathetic environment where others can feel relief from overwhelming thoughts and feelings.
Children learn and express themselves through playing, doing and creating. Child therapy provides a neutral ground where children can process their feelings using creative, active interventions. Finding the underlying causes of certain behaviors and emotions can help to relieve symptoms and behaviors. We process through stressful situations, traumas and changes in family dynamics creating healthier communication and utilizing coping skills.
In couples counseling we work to change and improve communication. I utilize the Gottman Method as I am Gottman Level 1 trained. Conflict is at times unavoidable, but with healthy communication conflict can be discussed and resolved in an appropriate and progressive way. We will work to identify issues within the relationship and improve perpetual conflicts, creating a deeper understanding of one another. We address multiple areas including but not limited to intimacy, conflict resolution, respect, communication, fidelity, and trauma. Removing barriers can create a heightened sense of empathy towards one another.
Individual therapy sessions can not only be held at the office, but also in school. They are still made confidential, as the client and myself will meet in a private area that the school designates. I am able to meet with kids during study hall, a lunch period or recess if this fits their schedule. With the schools approval, school counseling can be an easy way to fit a therapy session in a busy day.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a structured therapy used in trauma work. EMDR can be effective in treating trauma, anxiety, depression, grief and a variety of other mental health issues. This modality stimulates the left and right hemispheres of the brain using bilateral stimulation. We bring to the surface historical, distressful events that contributed to maladaptive thought patterns- both conscious and subconscious. This allows us to identify, process and replace the negative cognitions we develop with positive ones.
